Think outside the effects box - AttackDelaydrive

On Monday I presented a distortion effect that was dependent on frequency to distort. Somewhat different that the treble boosters of the past, but it still made for a very interesting effect. Today I will present a more complex effect that takes attack and delay and frequency control to another level.
Imagine if you would an effect that if you played subtly, your notes would come through, nice and relaxed with a subtle delay, when you hit harder, the clean note would ring and then quickly mute, and slowly a distorted note would fade in. At the same time, A delay would go from 0% mix up based on the level that you hit the string. As your string fades, the delay fades out. A hard hit makes you sound like you are playing backwards.

Follow up:
This effect is based off a weird idea I had to create an effect that sounded like a distortion and delay. As the other effect this one is driven by dual JRC4558D op amps. The crossover frequency is also used and is affected by the strength of the string hit. As the volume is higher, the crossover frequency is LOWER. So a harder hit gives a quick CLEAN tone and then crosses over to the distorted tone based on the sensitivity selector. On this model the OD section is VOLUME and TONE neutral. The delay level is affected by the sensitivity as the delay time. Delay time increases as delay time increases and delay time decreases and delay time decreases. Changes in level of playing causes chorusing and detuing based on subtle changes in the delay time from the release portion of the normal string attack.
You may think this all sounds odd and makes no sense, so here is a clip of the Attack-Delaydrive in action

Notice how you can hear the obvious de-tuning effect when the guitar is played quietly, it sounds terribly out of tune. When I recorded this I had to check at the end that I was still in tune. The effect would be less distracting if played over background music. Very freaky effect!
Again, an interesting idea for an effect. I hope that you have enjoyed this weeks effects out side the effectsbox!| « Some people believe anything | Single Coil's Manifesto part 2 » |
