The Peavey AT-200 is an Antares system powered auto-tuned guitar. I recently had the opportunity to play one and compare it with a Gibson Robot Guitar.

A good clean boost will increase the volume of your signal without introducing unwanted clipping, harmonics or changes in tone characteristics. This allows the guitar player to have increased signal without turning up the amplifier. One should remember that turning down the volume on your guitar DOES alter the tone of the signal. So just using your volume knob on your guitar may be ONE way to change your level, there is another way that you can increase volume, and that is by using a clean boost.

If you are a gigging musician, you need your equipment to work, and work right all the time. If your equipment takes a dive, you are the one on stage looking silly leaning over with your butt hanging high in the air holding up the show. Even if you are in a studio, precious studio time is wasted fixing things that shouldn’t break under normal use.
So, what should be considered normal use and what shouldn’t be. I would consider if you Velcro a pedal to your pedalboard that should be it. As long as you are not throwing your pedalboard off the bridge, you should be fine. I am very careful with my equipment. Nothing ever sits on top of the pedal board, stuff is handled gently, so I was totally amazed when my BBE Boosta Grande pedal actually came unscrewed during a show. The nut that held the output jack came completely dislodged from normal use. I took the BBE Boosta Grande apart and screwed things back together, and took it off the pedal board. I would have been at a loss.
A reliable friend of mine had purchased two Mooer pure boosts and wanted me to try one. I set it in the same spot on my pedal board. I had not heard much about that company, so I thought I didn’t have much to loose. This pedal went down in my history as the quickest to stop working. Under normal conditions, it stopped working after about 8 hours of playing. I didn’t like how it colored my tone, even with some options to adjust characteristics.
So goes the question, pedal build. I have owed hundreds of effects pedals in my life and only a few have given me issues. There are a few pedals I have owned I would consider highest quality construction. Those have included pedals by Heavy electronics, T.C. Electronics, Visual Sound and Pedals by Tone. In the past week I have put a PBT Boost in my line up and find it to be a top build/construction. When I took this apart to take a look, it is a very clean build like you would expect from a top of the line boutique pedal builder, built strong, connections tight, everything neat and in its place.

I think we would be wrong by not reflecting on where the boost pedal came from. In 1969 Electro-Harmonix developed what they called the LPB-1 a linear power boost. Wikipedia gives a great description - "The LPB-1 massively boosted a guitar signal to provide gain by clipping the signal, resulting in a raw distorted sound, full of sustain and harmonics."
Great if you want to color your sound AND boost it, but what about if you ONLY want to boost your signal. Then what you need to find is a clean boost.
Over the years I have owned many boosters, and have played many more. Some color the sound, some are poorly constructed, some are really poorly constructed and sound terrible. I created a self inventory of boosts I have owned or played and there were 12 different ones that I have played.
Recently, Tony from Pedals by Tone started building boosts recently, and with the great successes that I have had with the OD, I decided I needed to be one of the firsts to get one of these builds. I have had this pedal for less than 1 week as of the date of this post, and I cannot describe how amazing this works. Clean boost exactly how it should be.
Some facts about signal boosters:
If you are using a tube amp, a signal booster will push your tube amp. This will change your tone, but usually only when you push the tubes.
If you are using a solid state amp, a signal boost will color your tone less, unless you get to a point of where you are clipping the solid state pre-amp. Results on a solid state amp are more forgiving at lower levels and less forgiving at higher levels.
Signal boost before an overdrive will produce more gain, but give you a different overall tone.
Signal boost after an overdrive will give you more volume, but SHOULD retain your tone if the boost is of high quality, and your signal is not too hot.
Signal boost before a distortion will produce more gain, and will also give you a different overall tone AND different harmonics.
Signal boost after a distortion will give you more volume but should retain the type of clipping the distortion created.
Signal boost in conjunction with Fuzz is hit or miss depending on the fuzz circuit. Sometimes it will sound very good and sometimes it will sound very bad.
Signal boost in an effects loop will give you varied results depending on how your effects loop is powered (solid state, tube, etc.)
Signal boost before modulation effects have varied results depending on brand and model of modulation.
