Lyresto
« on: July 07, 2013, 09:09:40 PM »
Recorded a cover of a tune called Lyresto today....great tune by Kenny Burrell off the Coltrane/Burrell record. Just did it to see if I could and I've always wanted to learn the tune. It has a great head/melody but is a little tough to learn because it's so freaking long! It seems to go on and on...

not the greatest mix but here it tis....

slightly different mix...not sure if it's better or not. Knocked down some clipping at least.

When I grow up, I want to be like Brad! Really good!

(second mix was a bit better, but the playing comes thru just as well on either)

thanks Mark! This was a fun tune to work up...it had been on my to do list for a long time. Got a work out trying to swing it like Burrell. Man that guy has an incredible touch.

Next on the list is Jean De Fleur off Grant Green's Idle Moments. I'm gonna kick that one around for a little bit and try to record it. Always dug that one!

When we played Jazz In The Pines last year, Kenny Burrell just blew my mind.  The guy walks like the dirty old man character on the old Rowan and Martin's Laugh In show, but his hands still move like greased lightening!

Thanks Danny...yeah he's in his mid-80's now but still doing it! One of the few survivors from that era. It'll be a sad day when he's gone. I've worshiped the ground he's walked since I was a teenager and first started playing. The first jazz record I bought was Midnight Blue...and it's still my favorite. I probably have 70+ Burrell records...that's no exageration. You would not believe how many sessions he's recorded...well over a 100 under his own name and then there's all the sideman stuff. Thank god for the interwebs and people transferring their old vinyl to disk. I've gotten some GREAT Burrell stuff that you just can't buy anymore.

Outstanding.

I like the second mix better. The rhythm guitar doesn't interfere with the lead in this one (which it barely does in the other one).
The playing is great as ever. It's always a pleasure to listen to your stuff man.

How bout a rundown of the gear used?

Thanks Jonny....not much gear to talk about. 335 direct to an apogee one using garage band. The 335 is the only guitar I own that I can tolerate going direct. Still not great but works for something quick.

Counting the stuff he's done for other people, Kenny Burrell has played on 1,000 records!

Thanks Rich!
I can believe a 1000+ sessions for KB. I have everything from live Billie Holiday concerts to live BB King that has Burrell on guitar. Legend has it that he always had 2-3 albums worth of material in his pocket at all times. Always ready to cut a record. Hell I've been playing 25 yrs and still don't have 1 record's worth of ideas! Lol

Yeah that was the stage announcement that he emcee made at Jazz in the Pines, over 1,000 albums!  He walked around the stage after every song handing out charts to the band, and he moved in slo-mo until he sat down and picked up his guitar, and then he was back in the greased lightening mode.  When it was all over he packed his own gear, no one even helped him.  I thought "What a bunch of ingrates!"  I suppose somehow they all though they were all on the same plane as him.  I don't care who you are, you ain't.

Amazing!
Does anyone ever read these things.  I have some guitars, some amps and some effects but none of them play the guitar for me.... Yet.
