Dink's Song (Fare Thee Well)
« on: October 12, 2013, 02:15:51 AM »
It's been a long while since I recorded any music. I recently fell in love with this old folk song, and decided to cover it.

Here goes nothing.

Thanks Rich. At first I had it going throughout the whole song, with pretty standard bluegrass rolls. But it sounded pretty overwhelming, so I cut it down to just that last verse, and a less traditional strumming/picking combo method instead of the standard roll.

Pretty nice stuff, it reminds me of the PBS show "Bluegrass Underground".  Add one more vocal track with a clothes pin closing your nostrils and it will be totally authentic!
They call it the Blues, but the shit makes me SMILE!

Sounds great Jonny....nice job layering in all the vocals and instruments.

I've heard Kelly Joe Phelps cover "fare thee well" also. Check him out if you've never heard him. His first few records of country blues stuff are incredible. I lost interest when he changed directions from lap slide, blues to singer/songwriter stuff. He had one record in between the transition that was just him basically making weird animal noises on the guitar  :brow: it was bizarre stuff.

Actually, I did pick up his new cd "Brother, Sinner & The Whale" which was all traditional gospel songs and he was back to playing blues/slide...I think he found Jesus or something. Good cd.

Sorry for rambling...Just listening to your version made think of it and I think you would like his early stuff a lot.

Very nice JB, enjoyed it. Reminded me a bit of John Hartford off his Steam Powered Aeroplane album.
