Best 18W amp in the $1,000 - $2,000 range
« on: April 23, 2013, 03:46:33 PM »
Thoughts on what the best amp in the 1,000 - 2,000 range about 18 Watts.

I have heard some positive thoughts on DR. Z
Other amps

Would want combo or head/cab between 1,000 and 2,000.

Does anyone ever read these things.  I have some guitars, some amps and some effects but none of them play the guitar for me.... Yet.

A little outside the price range, unless you have your own cab, and can go with a head version.   I've played on one of these at a jam.   Very nice Fenderish tones alone, and takes pedals well.   40/18w switchable.

Any more parameters to narrow it down.   For instance, marshall family (plexi clones, 1974 (18w) clones) vs. Fender family?

Want something a little outside the box.  My old fender sounds great, just too much power for the small things with a 2x12.   Not clean, but a little broke up.

Bogner Duende (couple of different wattage options depending on what year/model you buy)
Reinhardt MI-6
Reinhardt 18

I've owned the first two, still have the Duende. Heard the 18, every bit as sweet as the MI-6 with a little less growl and a little more chime.

IMO Ken, the Duende is going to give you the best tone and bang for the buck - especially if you can get a hold of an older one with the swamp switch.

Lush reverb, awesome trem, 2 channels (clean that goes from pristine clean to plexi-ish territory and a dirt channel that goes from punchy breakup to Marshall JMP 50 territory with a more focused midrange), plus you can blend the two channels together, buffered effects loop, power amp line out - all in a 1x12 combo for $1500 or under.

If you buy the 12 watt model you can swap out the rectifier tube and rebias for 15 watts. The swamp/modern switch will change the amp's character from as much tube sag and bloom as you can handle to a more tight and aggressive bottom end. It takes any pedal you can throw at it extremely well. Plus it's very light!

A couple of my recordings using the amp set up for 12 watts:

Clean channel with the gain up, no pedals, amp reverb, Tom Anderson neck/middle p/u:

Dirt channel, no pedals, reverb/delay/compression added at mixdown, Strat, bridge p/u (single-coil sized Screamin' Demon):

The hardest thing is finding someone who actually has one you can test drive.  May be making a trip to chicago.

Yeah, that's tough. You should look up Scot when you're in Chicago - isn't here around those parts?

Did you get a chance to play any of the suggested amps Ken?

I have to  get some time off to travel to find anything good.  Dave's seems to have a good selection of amps as well as the Chicago music exchange, but niether have the Duende or the Reinhardt .

Milwaukee area seems to drive towards Heavy rock, or the staple fender/marshall amps.

I have been keeping a close eye on CL just to see if something unique shows up just to give it a run through.
