Buster spkr swap
« on: March 25, 2014, 04:37:31 PM »
Swapped out the celestion g12h30 in my Buster  with a new weber alnico. What a difference. The g12h was too dark and thick for my tastes... and got darker the more you cranked the amp.  The weber has those sweeter alnico  mids and more of that  piano-like clarity. Great speaker!

 Hope everyone's doing well!

Also...I did lose some volume going to a less efficient spk but well worth the trade-off.

How much volume did you think you lost with the speaker change?
Does anyone ever read these things.  I have some guitars, some amps and some effects but none of them play the guitar for me.... Yet.

Maybe 10-15% if I had to guess. It's just  a softer sounding speaker. Gives it more of a broken-in feel like a nice old tube amp. My favorite thing about alnicos are the mids seem more complex and detailed compared to a ceramic...just more soulful sounding to me.

Had a chance to gig it over the weekend...much improved. The volume thing was a non issue, still plenty on tap. The tone was much better, still warm but not muddy. The string definition was excellent.

There was a time when I was all about JBLs and Altecs.  Anymore I much prefer a way less effective speaker, in fact, the cheaper the better.  I'd rather have warm than powerful any day.  These days I get volume complaints using my little Super Champ!
They call it the Blues, but the shit makes me SMILE!

I used to prefer ceramic but that was more to do with stage volume. Really needed them to cut through. That's not an issue anymore. Its nice to actually be able to  hear subtle differences on stage.
